Southern Combine car

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I saw a Southern combine car at a local railroad muesum, and I need more info on it for a possible model. The reporting marks said "Southern 960417 MWX" Does anyone know the previous numbers, paint schemes, etc. Since it had been in M.O.W. service, all of the stuff inside it had been removed. do you know how big the baggage compartment was? If you can E-mail me with more info. - (E-Mail:Bcay4501@Aol.com)

According to "Southern Railway Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment" by James Kinkaid, the 960407 was an ex-Tennessean RPO (ACF 1950)that had it's windows filled was converted to M.O.W. service after it was taken out of service on the Tennessean. Drawings of a similar P.S. car are available in the December 1991 and January 1992 Mainline Modeler. The 960417 might be a similar conversion from one of these 60' postal apartment cars.
