Diversity Awarenessgreenspun.com : LUSENET : M.Ed. Cohort II : One Thread |
Hello everyoneI am working with some students on the issue of racism for Diversity Awareness week in April. We can do classroom activities or have guest speakers or whatever we want. We can do just about anything. I was wondering if anyone knows a really good speaker or some good activities that I could use. I don't want to do the same old thing so I thought our cohort would have some ideas on the subject. Whatever you can contribute would be appreciated. Thanks Ed

Ed, I'm not sure what your budget is, but there are several Depot Outreach artists who have programs on diversity.Carol McCormick is a storyteller who does a program titled "All One Family." This focuses on multiculturalism, how common threads weave people together, and seeing ourselves as a global family. She involves her audiences of all ages through songs and stories.
Ranee Ramaswamy is a native of India who presents the music and classical dance form of "Bharatanatyam" dressed in full costume. She promotes respect, curiosity, and appreciation of other cultures. She also presents to audiences of all ages.
If you would like more information, please email or call me at the Depot (733-7509)

I took a course last summer from Betsy Quinterro that involved diversity and multicultural issues in the classroom. She may be a resource or know of others who may be appropriate for your focus. Have you checked with the resource teachers at 709"S Cultural Center at Washington Center? That's all I can think of right now. Good luck.

Ed--UMD has an International Club which is headed by Karin Robbins. She has student speakers from Japan, China, Middle East, India who will come to talk to students about their cultures. I don't know if this is what you are looking for but I know that my husband who teaches at Denfeld has groups of students come to talk to his classes and they are very good.
