Where can I find information (old cook books, restaurant/saloon menus, newpaper columns)on the foods that were prepared in SF's early days?

"Annals of San Francisco" has a lot about everyday life in SF during the Gold Rush, including stuff about restaurants and boarding houses. (When you say "early days" do you mean Gold Rush, or Mission times, or Mexican rule?)

Try "Bohemian San Francisco" - There is a 1973 reprint of this 1914 book. "clarence E. Edwords tours the gastronomic world of San Francisco in its golden era, revealing the city's rich and fascinating culinary heritage...presents a valuable picture of the restaurants and recipes that made San Francisco dining famous. The spices and aromas of a truly international cuisine before and after the great earthquake are captured in these tales of Bohemian spirit and revelry." It has 63 recipes.
