Has any one heard of vacations being disallowed during the fourth quarter of 1999?

I read somewhere (and also on another thread in this forum) that some hospitals are already telling employees that there won't be any vacations from December 1999 through (I think) January 2000. Also don't forget that some state (Wisconsin?) has already told it's National Guard that they will be on duty 12/31/99. I guess you could read between the lines that they won't allow any PTO then either. This issue will probably become publicized as more companies come to the conclusion that they aren't sure they'll be ready for the new milleneum.

My brother-in-law who works for the IRS. Not only can he not take vacations, but his work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m..

Anyone who had anything to do with Y2K in our organization will not be taking any time off from 12/15/1999 thru 1/15/2000. In fact we plan to have army cots on sight the night the date rolls. They may never let us outa here!!

Oh yeah..

We've already had newspaper reports about all holidays and leave cancelled for certain groups such as police and military. I think it was the police that are cancelled between Dec 27, 1999 and March 15, 2000. Also, large employers have started to serve notice that "certain position" will not be allowed any leave around the time of the new century.

I have two cousins and a friend who all work for different hospitals in L.A. County and each has been told they will not be able to take vacations around the turn of the millennium until deep into 2000.

Those are the only people I know who have been told personally that this is the case.

The following two words do not belong in the same sentence: employer & loyalty. I'm jaded in that I've seen the effects that corporate down-sizing has had on too many families.

Example: The manufacturer I was with from 1993-1996 laid-off their entire third shift five days before Christmas. The employees were told when they picked up their paychecks that Friday. By the way, the company set a record for revenue that year. Fact!

Based upon the current trends,rumors,etc., I will not be going to work after 12/24/99 until I know that things have settled down.

My family gets my loyalty, not my employer!

My wife, who is a pharmacist with a major chain, will not work the last week of 1999 unless they pay her in cash. Since her paychecks are a week behind, we figure that she won't ever see a check for it.

After the power goes out, she's not going in. If she did, it'd be with myself guarding her with a rifle. :)

Personally, I'm planning to take the entire month of Dec 1999 off. If things aren't too bad, I'll work for cash only. Have to see.

Shortly after Wisconsin announced its plans to have its national guard on duty 12/31/99 Iowa followed suit. It is a wonder that other states have not made an announcement regarding their nation guard.

Ron, here is a portion of a posting I made back in Sept. when a friend of mine at a large bank in Houston was given that type of notice. I actually got the note from her and copied the contents onto the forum. It was the first such notice I had actually seen.

ParkTwain, I have the Memorandum in front of me. This is what it says: "As you are all aware, the 'Year 2000' represents potential problems for computers, software, and the companies/individuals using them. As you know, ----- ---- Bank has been working on its preparedness plan for the 'Year 2000' and the problems it potentially brings. In this regard, and in conjunction with the bank's preparedness plan, we are all being asked to not schedule vacation time for the month of December 1999, or the month of January 2000. Your assistance in scheduling vacation time around these two months is important to the plan, and the bank, and is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call --------..." The memorandum does not give any further details. My friend just got the notice today, so maybe we will learn more later. I am surprised that they are issuing this notice so far in advance. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
