DVD players that play CD-R VCDs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have read the VCD FAQ, and the listing of DVD players that play CDR VCD is small. Does anybody know if the Panasonic A110 DVD will play CDR? All I get is NO DISC when I try it after using VCD Creator, even though the files were correctly written in the MPEGAV dir and I can view it fine in Win98.

Thanks

Answers

The answer is no. DVD players that can play CD-R's have to have two lasers as the laser used for reading DVDs has to short of a wavelength for CD-R.

Some of DVD/VCD can read CDR.

Pioneer DVL-888 can read CDR

All Panasonic can't read

For the record, Pioneer's DVL-909 LD/DVD/VCD combo player plays VCD on CD-R just fine. Also plays VCD on CD-RW, but playback isn't as smooth as on CD-R.

Well I thought too for a long time that Panasonic DVD's can't read CD- R's. But they can. It all comes down to the amount of reflection the disc gives.

This is how we found out:

Kodak Gold CD-R's was rejected by the player - but compared to normal CD-R's (with blue underside) the DVD used a few sec. to actually see if the disc had any info.

Next thought was - let's try the CD-RW-disc (HP brand shipped with the CD-RW device) - it's completely silver underneath - no blue colour at all. BINGO - the Panasonic started playing the VideoCD.

So we went hunting - trying to find CD-R medias with no blue reflection limiting layer - we found one type and were told that this was not the only type available - so happy hunting:

Mr. Platinum - 700 MB discs for the price of about $2 (15 Danish Kroner)

Hi guys

It seems my posting has been more problematic than help to you. Here is what I can help you with when it comes to medias that work with the Panasonic drives:

I don't know if Mr. Platinum is available at all outside of Denmark - and if then I'm most certainly the wrong guy to ask that question - sorry. But I do know that my friend and I happened to find some non-branded CD-R media that did work - these surely wasn't Mr. Platinum! But at the same store the week after we went to buy more medias - these didn't work - reason: they had a light golden colour - almost not different at all from the first batch. We also discovered that 650 MB medias from Mr. Platinum worked too - which is good since they are cheaper ;-) But one thing is for sure about Mr. Platinum - the name might be exclusive to Denmark or Scandinavia - don't know - but it's 100% sure these are NOT produced here in Scandinavia - the name is simply a license thing - somebody produces them - and Gidana - that sells them - add the Mr. Platinum labels - but again I don't know where they are manufactured.... So all I can say is - check out a few stores that sell CD-R's - ask the them if you can have a look at the recording surface to see if they are silver, ask them if they know any brand that is silver - meaning silver without any blue layer. I'm sure you'll find something. Once the rumour is spread they'll be sold in plenty - like here - they seem to work better for PlayStation too than Kodak....and they are cheaper - a combination that's hard to beat...

Hi,

I recieved a SONY DVD player for Christmas... It said it plays DVD/CD/VIDEO CD I had never realy heard of VCD until then (or being American had turned a Deaf Ear to it) I had a CD-R drive at work so I looked on the internet and found this forum...

I also found ..... DazzleMuti media VCD rewiter....

my new daughter was born on1/12 and on 1/18 i bought the DAzzel

I made my first VCD on the 1/24 a segment of Earth Final Conflict...

and it played very well on the sony DVP-500d and every other sony i tried... (the 5 disk one too). I have made over 20 VCDs. All the Dilbert episodes... Star Trek voyager the 2 hour episode and many X-file Episodes and yes, even the first 3 pokemon for the kids on one vcd (painted to look like a pokeball) even cutting it with a razor knife did not keep it from playing back in the sony...( I thought it was funny that it still played..)

I have had a crash of two the number of crashes being 4 THEY WERE MY FAULT...

oh, a note about FINIALIZING..... the sony plays non-FINIALIZED VCDs' not all payers can do that.... the TOC never Being written and all I found that when i make a VCD and FINIALIZE it it behaves better in different software (VCD CUTTER) and hardware

I tried to create a video CD too. When I used Adapetec Video CD Creator, it kept giving me a "Check Win" error everytime I added a file to the playlist... finally I got a bd burnt and tried it on a Panasonic A110 DVD player and it did not work. I tried all my Audio CD's on CDR and they did not work. I took the Video CD to Best Buy and tried it on all their Video CD's and it did not work on any of them either. The only answer I got was that the Cd has to say Digital on it? Can anyone confirm if it is the CD or the DVD player that is the problem?

Just a note that Panasonic A100 doeas not play VCD that are burnt on CD-R. Tech support firmly say copied VCD shall not play on any of their products!

I just tried in Best Buy, my CD-R VCD on Pioneer DV-414 $350 or so worked just fine. The VCD was created using-AVI-MPEG1-Adaptec vcd writer.

Does anyone know if the Pioneer DV414 DVD/Video CD/CD play burned Video CD's. Please let me know soon!

Thank you..

I have the Panasonic DVD/Video CD/CD Player DVD-A120U. It says it will not play CD-RW and CD-R. When I play a CD-RW I get a disc type not valid message. When I play a CD-R (with blue or green burn side) I get a no disc message. I was wondering if CD-Rs with the silver burn side will work, and are there any brands here in the USA that sell silver burn side CD-Rs.

Thanks.
