How many Americans, Brits, and other nationalities had speaking parts? I know some Americans learned a British accent and vice versa.

Kate Winslet is British and learned a "Philadelphia" accent for the movie, Leo DiCaprio pretty much talked the same as his normal voice. Billy Zane is also American and had to learn the Philadelphia uppity-talk. The extras were Americans from Florida and Mexicans. Since America's a melting pot, I'm not sure in what proportion and what nationality the Americans or their ancestors were originally before they got to this continent. Most of the stars from the show were Americans.

Thanks, Jen. I was actually interested in the number of speaking parts that each country had, i.e. U.S. 10 characters, U.K. 5 characters, etc. I'm thinking particularly about the ship crew (Lightoller et al). I know the guy who is carrying several life vests and gets punched out by Rose is actually American, though he had a British accent. Victor Garber seems British or Irish. All the officers seemed British or Irish, but I'm wondering if I'm wrong. Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure that Victor Garber is American as he has been in films and on stage here in the U.S. for more than 20 years. He portrayed Architect Richard Andrews beautifully and his Irish (I believe) accent was very authentic sounding.

Actually, the ship builder's name was Thomas Andrews. But anyway, I was also curious about the accents of the crew. Kathleen, your name sounds very familiar to me. Are you a Gone With The Wind fan?
