I noticed that "Captain Smith" has a pierced left ear. Is this an authenticity "goof", or did sailors back then really pierce their ears?

Well, I did not notice that but if you go back in history to the days of the pirates, they had pierced damned near everything (although not as much as today). Having said that, I really do not think Captain E.J. Smith had anything pierced other than his ship.(sorry about that).
